New to Bowls
"Bowls is easy to begin, but there is far more to the game than simply getting close to the jack."
What is lawn bowls?
Bowls is a target sport played by delivering bowls towards a small target ball called the jack.
- Jack: the target for each end.
- Bowls: weighted bowls that curve as they travel.
- Rink: the lane of play on the green.
- Ends: each cycle of bowls delivered in one direction.
- Scoring: points are based on bowls closer to the jack than your opponent's nearest bowl.
What do I need?
Start simple:
- comfortable bowls clothing,
- suitable flat footwear,
- borrowed bowls while you are starting.
You do not need to buy equipment immediately.
What happens at my first session?
Your first session is usually friendly and practical:
- meet your coach,
- basic safety and rink etiquette,
- how to hold the bowl,
- delivery basics,
- line and length focus,
- short practice and a simple game situation.
Do I need to be fit?
Bowls accommodates a wide range of ages and abilities. Balance and mobility still matter, and your coach can help you adapt technique to suit your current movement.
Do I need experience?
No. Beginners are welcome.
Should I buy bowls straight away?
It is usually better to wait. Try different sizes and types first, then get advice before buying.
What will I learn?
Over time you build delivery, line, length, basic shot choices, game understanding, teamwork and strategy.
