Common Problems

Why Am I Good in Practice but Inconsistent in Matches?

Practice and competition place different demands on attention, decision-making and confidence.

Player managing pressure and routine during competition

Match State Changes Decisions

Pressure can alter routine, timing and commitment if unmanaged.

The Problem

Performance quality in practice does not consistently transfer to match conditions.

Possible Reasons

  • Score awareness.
  • Fear of missing.
  • Rushing.
  • Changing routine.
  • Overthinking.
  • Opponent pressure.
  • Trying to play the perfect bowl.
  • Indecision before delivery.

What to Observe

  • Does pre-shot routine change?
  • Does delivery speed change?
  • Do you spend longer deciding?
  • Does body tension increase?
  • Do errors follow difficult ends or poor bowls?

What You Can Try

  • Use the same pre-shot routine in practice and matches.
  • Decide PURPOSE before stepping onto the mat.
  • Commit to the chosen shot.
  • Review the bowl after delivery rather than during it.
  • Practise with consequences or simple pressure situations.

When Coaching May Help

If pressure repeatedly disrupts your decisions or routine and you cannot identify a stable process under competition stress.

Advice: Make one evidence-based change at a time. If you are unsure what is causing the problem, observe several bowls before altering your technique.
